- Born 1954 (62) in New York City but was raised in North Carolina
- In high school he did plays
- Went to college at Western Carolina University but dropped out to hitchhike to other countries
- Throughout his life, he was a part-time teacher, an elf at Macy and a housekeeper.
- He writes to make people laugh but also want them to relate to him
- In a PBS interview, he said.”Use to be about racking up laughs but I think it needs sorrow to give the laugher a bit of weight.”
- He keeps dairies then write about what’s in his diary. He has been doing that since the age of twenty-six
- “After a while, you’d stop being forced and pretentious and become honest and unafraid of your thoughts.”
- He is best known for his personal famous essays. The Santaland Diaries, Naked, Holiday on Ice and Me Talk Pretty One day
